Wordfirm

Wordfirm provides editorial services—mainly copyediting and proofreading—for nonprofits, government offices, publishers, and others. We can also work with partner designers and printers to provide our clients a full production team.

We typically serve clients who regularly need editorial work and want to be assured of consistent quality and quick turnarounds. We have carefully assembled a team of top-notch editors, and our project manager supervises all work.

Wordfirm is headquartered in Washington, D.C., but we serve clients across the country and around the world. We communicate with clients using e-mail and transfer documents using e-mail or FTP.

Since 1996, Wordfirm has edited tens of thousands of documents, from one-page flyers to multi-volume books. Our clients know they can count on us for professional service, efficient work, punctual delivery, and superb editing.

EDITORIAL WORK
We have carefully chosen our team of editors from a field of more than twelve thousand applicants. All have years of experience working with publications, particularly with books. Many have advanced degrees, as well as professional backgrounds in specialized areas.
Publication projects may require this editorial work:

Substantive (or developmental) editing: We work with you to reorganize and rewrite your manuscript as needed, developing content that is logical, accurate, complete, and appropriate for the intended audience. Most manuscripts coming to us will not need this work.

Copyediting: We check for errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage; ensure consistency of editorial style throughout the document; clear up confusing and awkward writing; and query for problems we cannot resolve. All manuscripts require copyediting and proofreading.

Proofreading: Our proofreaders review an already-edited document, checking for any remaining errors and inconsistencies and ensuring that no errors were introduced during layout.

Indexing: We manually create a professional index for your book following one of the various index styles. Because a truly useful index is based on ideas, not just words, it must be created by a trained indexer, not a computer.

FULL PRODUCTION
Sometimes clients need a complete team to produce a publication—editor, proofreader, designer, and printer. Wordfirm can handle the editing and proofreading, but in these cases we refer our clients to designers, printers, and other partners.
The designers we work with come with years of experience, well-honed skills, and success as creative problem solvers. They have done work for such publications and organizations as National Geographic, Scientific American, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Wordfirm works with a number of top printers, both in the United States and abroad. We have carefully vetted these printers, have come to understand their capabilities, and have developed professional relationships with them.

Most clients prefer to manage their publication projects themselves, so Wordfirm simply makes referrals to help clients create the production team they need. We do, however, offer clients guidance on how best to handle the publication project.
